The boring thing that saves the trip

Phone data in Rhodes: eSIM, roaming or just Wi-Fi? 📱

Nobody plans a holiday around mobile data — until you're standing outside the airport with a melting toddler, trying to load the transfer confirmation on a phone that says “No Service.” Two minutes of reading now prevents that scene. The honest answer depends entirely on your passport.

The 20-second answer: EU visitors — you likely need nothing, your plan roams free in Greece. UK visitors — check your plan; many networks now charge for EU roaming, and an eSIM is often cheaper. US/Canada/Australia and everyone else — a travel eSIM almost always beats your carrier's roaming rates by a mile.

By passport, honestly 🛂

EU & EEA visitors — relax

“Roam like at home” rules mean your Dutch, German, Polish or Scandinavian plan works in Greece at domestic rates. Your data allowance may have a fair-use cap abroad — check your provider's app — but for a normal holiday you can skip this entire topic. Enjoy. 😄

UK visitors — check before you fly

Post-Brexit, this became a lottery: some UK networks still include EU roaming, others charge daily fees (often £2–£6 per day, per phone — that's £56+ for two parents over a week) and some throttle data abroad. Open your provider's app and check “EU roaming” before you fly. If your plan charges daily fees, a Greece eSIM for a few pounds total usually wins easily.

Honest warning The classic trap: assuming your plan roams free because it did in 2019. Rules changed network by network. Two minutes in your carrier app now beats a surprise bill later.

US, Canada, Australia & everyone else — eSIM, almost always

Carrier roaming from outside Europe tends to be brutally priced (think $10–12 per DAY on the big US carriers). A prepaid travel eSIM for Greece or Europe costs a fraction of that for a whole week — you install it before you fly, it activates when you land, your home number stays active for calls/texts.

What's an eSIM, in parent terms 🤔

A digital SIM card you buy online and install by scanning a QR code — no shop visits, no tiny plastic tray, no losing your home SIM in a beach bag. Any recent iPhone (XS and newer) and most recent Androids support it. Buy it at home, install it on the sofa, switch it on when you land at Diagoras. Data works before you've reached baggage claim — which means the transfer confirmation, WhatsApp to the driver, and Google Maps all work in that critical first hour.

Quick answers

Can I buy a local Greek SIM on Rhodes instead?

Yes — Greek providers have shops in Rhodes Town and prepaid tourist SIMs exist. But it means a shop visit with your passport during holiday time, and prices aren't dramatically better than an eSIM you install from your sofa. With kids in tow, the errand-free option wins.

Does the eSIM give me a Greek phone number?

Most travel eSIMs are data-only — your regular number stays active for calls and texts (beware roaming charges on those for non-EU visitors; WhatsApp over data is the workaround everyone uses).

Will my phone definitely support eSIM?

iPhone XS/XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, most Samsung flagships from S20 on. The eSIM seller's site lists compatible models — check yours before buying, it takes ten seconds.
